Larry Willcutt
Larry concentrates on the watercolor medium because
he enjoys the unique challenges of controlling the
interaction between paper and paint. The hills and valleys
of the paper absorb pigments differently and those
differences can be the path to optically pleasing effects.
He often takes complex subjects and reduces them to
much simpler elements so they will be more effective
within his composition. Deciding which elements to
show in detail and which to simplify is a large part of
Larry's method of creating effective watercolor paintings.
He has periods when he doesn't paint often and other
times when he uses every spare moment for his next painting.
There was a 5 year period in the 80's when Larry painted
every day with a momentum that produced some of his best
work. He refers to those paintings as his Post Paintings.
His recent work was created at a more leisurely pace. He likes
to make many sketches and studies before committing to a
finished painting.
